The 7 Keys to Powerful Skip Hire

Our study indicates there are over 17 million skips hired in the UK annually for national use alone! That’s a whole lot of skips and if you’ve ever looked in Yellow Pages you’ll see there are a whole lot of skip businesses out there to pick from with no real way of knowing what sort of service you’re likely to get ahead of it turns up!
If, like us, you have ever hired a skip, chances are you will have had a fantastic experience with an expert, licensed waste collector without any hassles or despair. Waste King Rubbish Clearance
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. If you predicted more than 1 company before you actually hired a skip you may have found that a few of them:
– will not quote prices over the Telephone
– will not Let You Know What time it will be dropped off, or picked up
– will simply accept cash payments to the motorist
You might have had a bad experience where the motorist has refused to remove your skip without throwing a few of the rubbish back in your garden, demanded more money prior to taking away it damaged your property by bad handling of their wagon and the skip…
This manual is for you: This answers all of the most common questions associated with skip hire so you understand precisely what you’re getting into when you hire a skip and understand the whys and wherefores involved in skip hire so that you never have a bad experience. . .EVER!
1.
How can I tell which skip businesses in the Yellow Pages are the good ones?
Unless you know the business, you can’t. Any fool with a wagon and a skip can get an advert designed and printed to lure you to telephone them, but mainly it’s a lottery not just concerning service and prices, but also in terms of what actually happens to your waste – something that depressingly few of us actually think, or even care about.
Jump businesses aren’t actually regulated in the time of writing.
The bad ones are just cowboys that often fly-tip your waste and so enhance your council tax bill – cos the council are the ones who need to clean it up! (Flytipping is now costing local councils over #2.5 million annually! That’s our tax money!)
Did you know?
“Every 35 seconds, someone, somewhere is fly-tipping in the UK”
2.
Why is it that skips cost so much money?
No-one is faking skip hire is inexpensive, but think about the overheads involved:
Skip Wagon #35,000+
Skips #500/each for standard builderskip
Public Obligation #1250/year per automobile
Employer’s Liability #1250/year per automobile
Skip Wagon motorist #25,000/year
Fuel #20,000/year
Landfill taxes #18/ton increasing by #3 annually before 2010 where it will endure at #35/ton
Recycling prices Cost of Purchasing shredders, trommels, weighbridges, picking stations etc – #countless
Soon adds up doesn’t it? Getting rid of waste is not a cheap company, but it must go somewhere! Why isn’t my skip dropped off and picked up when I ask for it?
This isn’t necessarily the skip company’s error – too many people don’t know that hiring a skip is not like phoning a cab. Just think about what goes into the typical skip lorry driver’s day – it’s heavy haulage we are talking about this, and lots of things could go wrong on a pick-up or fall off that can slow down the entire day’s schedule, such as a customer putting poisonous waste in a skip, overfilling it, or even the motorist being given wrong drop off specifics by a customer.
We release a national trade magazine for the industry called”The Skip” (www.theskip.net) and through this we’re pushing for more skip businesses to integrate new technologies such as Vehicle Tracking to improve delivery programs and take-up of this sort of improvement is increasing all of the time.
In the meantime, you should be patient awaiting your skip because it’s rarely a case of intentionally lousy customer service. Why not they take the skip away if the rubbish is just over the remaining line?
It’s not the skip motorist being unreasonable – it’s the law! They’re legally bound not to carry unsafe loads and unfortunately many people order smaller skips than they need so as to save a couple of quid. Our advice – order a larger skip than you think you need because you’ll always fill it – just don’t go over the line!
5.
What actually happens to my garbage when they take it off?
If you’re not asking this question, you should be. Landfill space in the UK is running out fast. It’s estimated that by 2010 there will be virtually no landfill space left in Britain and the government is raising the landfill taxes that waste management businesses need to pay every year. The top skip businesses are investing heavily into new plant and technologies to the point that many of them are recycling around 90%! Employing these companies will eventually reduce prices and massively raise recycling rates – something we must be curious about.
The bottom line is – the cheaper the skip, the less probable it is that the waste is being managed. Why won’t my local skip company take a charge card or even tell me prices over the telephone?
That is mainly a historic matter. Most skip hire companies have developed over the past 25 years from construction and demolition companies, along with the conventional way they do business is by issuing invoices or cash-in-hand! Also, a lot of businesses charge for waste disposal by the tonne and will not always quote an exact cost because they don’t know precisely how much it’s likely to cost them to eliminate till it comes inside.
7.
Why is it that I get quoted so many different prices for exactly the same service from different businesses? You receive different levels of service from different businesses. When you have had a bad experience, you’ll wonder whether it actually was worth rescuing #20 by going with the cheapest you could find.
Plus there are other elements such as skip license prices. All skip businesses should inform you you need a license if the skip is to be on a public highway. These licenses are supplied by the local council – sometimes the company by law must sort it out to you, sometimes you’ll need to go direct to the council .
The variances in skip license price across the UK are staggering – a few council’s charge nothing and issue them the same day, some charge #70 and force you to wait weeks prior to issuing.
In the end…
It’s up to you. You now understand pretty much everything necessary to make an informed decision concerning which skip hire business to use.
